Privacy

The short version
There are no accounts on this site, no passwords, and no advertising trackers. We hold the minimum needed to sell you a computer and get it to your door.
What we collect
- Order information: your name, shipping address, email, and what you bought. We need all four to ship a machine and to handle a return.
- Your email, if you ask to hear about the next batch. One email per drop. Unsubscribe in one click; we delete the address when you do.
- Support correspondence: whatever you write to us, kept so the next person reading the thread has context.
What we don’t collect
- Card numbers.Payment happens on Stripe’s own checkout. Your card details never touch our servers and we never see the full number.
- No advertising cookies, and no data sold or rented to anyone.
- No accounts, so no passwords to leak.
Spam protection on the signup form
The drop-list form is protected by Google reCAPTCHA v3, which scores how likely a submission is to be automated. We’d rather be straight about the tradeoff: reCAPTCHA is a Google service, it sets Google cookies, and Google may use the signals it collects for its own purposes. That is the one third-party tracking technology on this site, and it exists so a stranger can’t script your address into our form a thousand times.
We limit it as far as the tool allows: the script loads onlywhen you actually interact with the signup form, not on every page you visit, so browsing the catalogue involves no Google code at all. Google’s Privacy Policy and Terms of Service govern that use.
We also record a one-way hash of your IP addresswhen you submit the form, salted with a secret only we hold. It lets us spot someone hammering the form; it cannot be reversed to recover the address, and it isn’t linked to your email.
The drop list
Signup is double opt-in: we email you a confirmation link and add nothing until you click it. If you never click, the unconfirmed entry sits inert and receives nothing further. That’s deliberate, it means nobody can use our form to bury a stranger’s inbox. Every email carries a one-click unsubscribe that works forever.
The same list has a signup form on bottleneckpc.com, our sister site under the same owner. Signing up there collects the same single thing (your email), for the same single purpose (stock announcements), with the same confirmation step and the same one-click unsubscribe. We record which site a signup came from and nothing else about your visit there.
Who else handles it
- Stripe: payment processing and tax calculation. They receive your name, email, address, and payment details directly.
- Vercel: hosting. Standard server logs including IP addresses, kept briefly for security and abuse handling.
- Carriers: USPS and UPS receive your name and address to deliver the machine.
- eBay: if you bought there, eBay’s privacy policy governs that order, not this page.
How long we keep it
Order records are kept for seven years because tax law requires it. Support email is kept for two years. Drop-list addresses are kept until you unsubscribe.
Machine records
The diagnostic and sanitization record attached to a machine describes the hardware, not you. It’s reachable only from the private link printed on that machine’s certificate, it isn’t indexed by search engines, and there is deliberately no public serial lookup. Those records aren’t linked to buyer identity.
Your rights
Email privacy@adoptalaptop.comto see what we hold about you, correct it, or have it deleted. We’ll respond within 30 days. Deletion requests can’t remove records tax law obliges us to keep, and we’ll say so plainly if that applies.
Children
This is a store for business computers. It isn’t directed at children under 13.
Changes
If this policy changes materially, the date above changes and anyone on the drop list hears about it.
